Major UK composting companies express support for CMCS

Top UK waste management companies—Envar and Biffa—have expressed support for the Compostable Materials Certification Scheme (CMCS), recognising its value in promoting the circular economy, compostable alternatives to conventional plastics, diverting biowaste from landfill, and returning biological matter to the soil.

Their endorsement reinforces the need for a robust labelling scheme to help consumers and composters identify certified compostable products and their end-of-life options.

Georgia Phetmanh, Head of the Organic Materials Certification Schemes at REAL, appreciating this support, said:

“We’re excited by the support expressed by these well-established composting and waste management companies, as we believe it reflects the value of the scheme. We are keen to promote the principles and services of CMCS and boost awareness of the scheme among industry stakeholders, highlighting its role in the sector.”

Martin Graves, Head of Commercial at Envar Composting, said:

“We are pleased to support CMCS with its aim to promote compostable materials over conventional plastic. As a producer and supplier of compost for soil improvement, we uphold the principles of circularity and firmly believe the production of compostable materials is critical to the development of a circular economy.”

Roger Wright, Waste Strategy & Packaging Manager at Biffa, said:

“CMCS offers a valuable pathway for industrially compostable packaging and products alike. We believe the scheme could serve as a really powerful tool to educate and encourage more food waste into the right systems with properly managed compostable packaging as a complementary way of feeding that infrastructure.”
